How to play
Players take turns dropping a disc into one of seven columns; it falls to the lowest free hole. The first to line up four in a row, across, up or diagonally, takes the round. A full board with no line is a draw. The first move alternates every round, and a match goes to 1, 2, 3 or 5 round wins.
Rules and variants
- Classic: the standard 7×6 board, four in a row.
- Grand: a 9×7 board where you need five in a row.
- PopOut (on either board): instead of dropping, you may pull one of your own discs out of the bottom row, and everything above it falls one hole.
- Move clock: off, 15, 30 or 60 seconds. When it runs out, a disc is dropped for you.
Friends, one screen or the computer
- Online with a friend: share an invite link. Your disc shows the moment you click, and a dropped connection gets your seat back within 30 seconds.
- Same device: two people take turns on one screen, with undo.
- Against the computer: easy plays like a beginner, normal like a careful player, and hard searches ahead with a real solver.
- Rowni is also a round in wleeaf Play parties: one round, 30 seconds a move, and bots can take a seat.
Controls
Hover or touch a column: a ghost disc shows where yours will land. Click or release to drop. On a keyboard, the arrows or 1–9 choose a column and Enter or Space drops; P pulls a disc in PopOut, H shows threat hints and U undoes.
What makes Rowni different
The board is an observatory at night: midnight-blue enamel with a gold star chart under the milky way. One player’s discs carry a sun and the other’s a crescent moon, so they never differ by colour alone. A winning line lights up star by star.
Questions
Is it like Connect 4?
Yes, it is a four-in-a-row game on a 7-column board, with its own look, a PopOut variant and a five-in-a-row Grand board.
Can I play alone?
Yes, against the computer at easy, normal or hard.
What is PopOut?
A variant where, on your turn, you may pull one of your own discs out of the bottom row instead of dropping one. Everything above it falls one hole, which can open or close lines for both players.
