Kurnivo

Kurnivo: air hockey in an old Turkish bath

Kurnivo is a free air hockey game for the browser, set in an Ottoman bath. The table is a slab of white marble under a film of warm water; the puck is a round cake of green olive-oil soap, and each player strikes it with a brass bath bowl turned over in the hand. Score by sending the soap into the marble basin at the far end. Lanterns glow, steam drifts and shafts of daylight fall from the star-shaped windows of the dome. Play a bot at three levels, invite friends with a link, or play a round in a wleeaf Play party, in English or Turkish.

Kurnivo: a brass bath bowl strikes a green soap across a wet white marble air hockey table with a green star and brass rails, a marble basin and lanterns beside it in an old Turkish bath

How to play

Move your bowl with the mouse or a finger and strike the soap; the faster the bowl, the faster it flies. Your bowl stays in your half. A goal is the whole soap past the basin’s line, and whoever let it in gets the next soap on their side. You may keep the soap in your half for seven seconds; then it goes over to the other side. A duel is first to seven on a five-minute clock: the leader wins at the bell, and level scores play a golden goal.

Friends, bots and parties

Send a link to play with up to eight friends. Two play a duel; with three or more the winner stays at the table and the others queue for their turn, and the first to win three bouts takes the match. Bots read the soap’s path, set up their shots, bank them off the rails and guard their basin, at easy, normal or hard. A friend who reloads the page takes the same seat back.

The bath

Everything is drawn in the browser: veined marble, Iznik tiles, striped towels, the water film rippling round the soap, splashes, soap bubbles and rose petals for a goal, and the echo of the bath in every sound.
